Setup and Calibrating
Learn how to download the ShotKam app on iOS and Android mobile devices. Follow our step-by-step guide for an easy setup process.
Step 1: Fully charge your ShotKam, then visit the App Store or Google Play Store on your iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or tablet.
Step 2: Search for "ShotKam," then select "Get" or "Install." The latest app will have the following icon:
Step 3: Once downloaded, connect to the ShotKam WiFi and open the ShotKam app:
1. Open the ShotKam app and select Connect Your ShotKam. With the ShotKam off, hold the control button down for 3-5 seconds, then release. You will see two yellow LED lights, then one will turn green.
2. Select the "ShotKam" network on your mobile device's WiFi or Connections settings.
NOTE: You will see "Unsecured Network" or "No Internet Connection." This is normal.
3. Return to the ShotKam app. You can now adjust the ShotKam settings, view videos, and align the reticle. The reticle is the red dot or crosshair seen in our videos.
Step 4: Create a short test recording to test the video download process:
Tap on "Test Recording" within the app to manually start and stop a recording. Once done, download and play the video in the "Watch Videos" section of the mobile app. Videos over 3 minutes in length are recommended to watch on a computer (instructions here).
Follow these steps to mount the ShotKam Gen 4 and Gen 4 Mini to your barrel and calibrate the reticle. Our comprehensive guide covers mounting, aligning the reticle, and selecting shooting modes for optimal performance.
Attach the ShotKam to your barrel
Begin with your shotgun or rifle unloaded. Next, follow these steps:
1. Loosen the silver screw on your quick-release mount with the provided Allen tool.
2. Position your ShotKam between 3 and 7 inches back from the muzzle; wherever feels comfortable to the balance of your gun. The lens must be at least 3 inches back from the muzzle in order to prevent debris from touching the lens. Do not attach over porting holes on a ported barrel.
3. Align the ShotKam directly under your barrel (the USB port will be facing up, closest to the barrel). Tighten the silver screw firmly.
Note: If you see the barrel in the top of your ShotKam videos, then either move the camera closer to the muzzle, or choose a more narrow (zoomed-in) field-of-view.
Calibrate the reticle (video crosshair)
To align the ShotKam's reticle to your Point-of-Aim, follow these steps:
1. Rest your gun on a gun bag, then aim the bead of your gun at a stationary target 30+ yards away. Ex. the corner of a trap house, or a sign 30+ yards away.
2. Open the ShotKam app and select "Calibrate Device."
3. To move the reticle, hold down the arrows for 3 to 4 seconds and release. Be sure to allow for a brief WiFi delay because the reticle moves one pixel at a time per second.
4. Repeat step 3 until your reticle is centered over your target (where your gun is aimed).

When ready to shoot
Charge your ShotKam for at least 3 hours or overnight.
Step 1: Turn ON with One Click
Start with the ShotKam off (no LED lights). Turn the ShotKam on with one click of the control button. You will see one yellow LED light that will turn to solid green, which indicates that your camera is ready to record. This is called "Normal Shooting Mode."
- Brief yellow light = warming up.
- Solid green light = ready to record and save your videos.
Step 2: Sleep Mode
After 20 seconds of inactivity (no recoil or action opening/ closing), the camera will go into "Sleep Mode" to conserve battery. You do not have to turn the camera OFF between stations because it will be in Sleep Mode.
- Slow flashing green LED light = Sleep Mode.
Step 3: Waken and Shoot Within 20 Seconds
When ready to shoot, close the action, then shoot within 20 seconds. The force of the action closing will wake the camera from Sleep Mode (the green LED light will be solid). Bump the gun or open/ close the action to restart the 20 second timer.
Once you take your shot, you will see a flashing blue LED to indicate that your shot is saving. You can keep shooting while the blue LED light flashes.

Battery and Specs
Optimize your ShotKam Gen 4 and Gen 4 Mini with the best zoom and video format settings. Our guide explains how to adjust video resolution, frame rates, and zoom levels for clear recordings.
Magnification Zoom
The Gen 4 and Gen 4 Mini have digital zoom, which means that it will automatically zoom based on your target (clays, flying birds, or big game). Both the Gen 4 and Gen 4 Mini intelligently adjusts the video resolution when it zooms in order to preserve the video quality.
Multiple zoom settings are available, including Wide field-of-view up to 8x Zoom, which you can easily change in the ShotKam mobile app's Advanced Settings. To learn how to adjust the zoom, click here.
Video Resolution and Frame Rate
The default setting is a 30° Field-of-View with a resolution of 2.7 K at 120 frames per second (ultra-high definition). Up to 4K resolution is available.
All Zoom, Resolution, Frames Per Second, and Field-of-View options:
- 4K at 60 fps | 2x Zoom (Wide Angle) = 44° FOV
- 2.7K at 120 fps | 3x Zoom = 30° FOV
- 1080p at 120 fps | 2x Zoom (Wide-Angle) = 44° FOV
- 1080p at 120 fps | 4x Zoom = 21.8° FOV -- This is the same FOV as Gen 3
- 720p at 120 fps | 6x Zoom = 15° FOV
- 540p at 120 fps | 8x Zoom = 11° FOV
Playback Recording Speed
The playback speed can be adjusted, but we recommend leaving it on the default "Normal" speed. The ShotKam records 120 frames per second in Ultra Full HD, then as it saves the video onto the internal memory card, it slows each video down to 1/3 speed. The purpose of this is to mimic how the human eye perceives a moving target (in one-third speed) and is unique to ShotKam's design. If you record a video with your iPhone and play it back, the target will look extremely fast. If you watch a ShotKam video, the target will look exactly like how you perceived it when shooting.
This means that your videos will play back at 40 frames-per-second which is perfect for a smooth video and clear understanding. We recommend keeping this "Normal", but you can adjust this setting within the ShotKam mobile app as follows:
- Slower (1/2 speed of "Normal"): The video will play 16.6 frames per second and be very slow.
- Faster (2x speed of "Normal"): The video will play 66.6 frames per second and be fast.
- Full Speed: The video will play 100 frames per second and be extremely fast. This is not recommended as most devices cannot process such a high data-rate.

1. Select Your Settings
Connect to the ShotKam’s WiFi, open the ShotKam app, then select Shooting Settings. Choose the correct shooting device, then select the “Flying Birds” target type.
Ensure the wake-up sensitivity setting is set to Normal, and that the video format is set to 2.7k at 120 fps. Save any changes.
2. Once in the Field
Turn your ShotKam on into Normal Shooting Mode with one quick click of the control button; you will see one green LED light. When solid green, the camera is now recording video and will go into Sleep Mode to save battery power after 30 seconds of inactivity. When your camera is in Sleep Mode (indicated by 1 blinking green LED), press the control button once to awaken it or bump the gun with your hand. Bump either the stock or forend; this vibration will waken the ShotKam.
NOTE: If the ShotKam is in constant Sleep Mode for 2 hours, then it will turn off automatically. You must waken the camera (1 solid green LED) once per hour. Either bump the gun, take a shot, or press control button.
3. Take the Shot
Shoot within 30 seconds of wakening the camera, or bump the gun to reset the 30-second timer. You will see a blinking blue LED after the shot is taken to indicate that your shot has been saved. The ShotKam will save 3 seconds pre-shot and 3 seconds post-shot. Any shots taken within 9 seconds of each other will be saved on the same continuous video. Playback speed is 1/3 speed, therefore videos will be 18-30 seconds long.

Battery Issue
Learn how to test the battery life of your ShotKam Gen 4 or Gen 4 Mini. Follow these steps to charge, disable sleep mode, and verify battery performance.
Gen 4 and Gen 4 Mini Battery Test
- Charge your ShotKam for at least 3 hours. The LED will be solid red when fully charged.
- Disable Sleep Mode: Connect to the ShotKam's WiFi newtork and open the app , then connect a smartphone or tablet to the ShotKam’s Wi-Fi. Open the ShotKam app, select the Settings icon (gear), tap on “Wake-Up Sensitivity,” then select “Sleep Disabled.”
- Close the app and turn the ShotKam OFF.
- Now, turn the ShotKam ON into Normal Shooting Mode (one click of the control button; 1 solid green LED).
-
Time how long it lasts before it turns off. Keep the camera in a cool room or under a fan. CAUTION: It will get hot; this is normal in test mode.
- Gen 4: Healthy battery should last 90 minutes in testing mode.
- Gen 4 Mini: Healthy battery should last 45 minutes in testing mode.
- Important: Turn the "Wake-up Sensitivity" setting back to Normal before going back to the range.
We recommend shooting in Normal Shooting Mode (one green LED light), then turning the camera into WiFi Mode when you would like to download and watch videos.
If your battery is not lasting during the battery test, please see Battery replacement information.
If your ShotKam 4 or Gen 4 Mini is not turning ON after pressing the control button or if the red LED light does not appear while charging, then we recommend performing a reboot. Your data will not be lost after doing a reboot.
- Remove the rear cap and ensure the ShotKam is unplugged.
- Click and hold the control button down for over 6 seconds, then release.
- Now turn the ShotKam back ON with one quick click; you will see one green LED light appear.
Will a reboot erase all of my videos?
No, the reboot will not erase your ShotKam videos. This is similar to restarting a computer, so you will not lose any data. All settings and calibration will remain the same.

Battery Not Lasting
If your ShotKam is shutting off unexpectedly, you might be using WiFi Mode (one green + one yellow LED light).
- Gen 4: Lasts 2 hours in constant WiFi Mode.
- Gen 4 Mini: Lasts 1 hour in constant WiFi Mode.
The frame-rate will also be lessened in WiFi Mode, so videos will be at 60 frames-per-second compared to 120. Please see: How to record and watch videos at the range.
Shoot in Normal Shooting Mode
- Normal Shooting Mode: Click the control button once. You will see one green LED light only.
- Records in 2.7K at 120 frames-per-second.
- Last about 15 hours.
- Each shot you take will automatically save as video (flashing blue LED light when a video is saved).
- Click once to turn the ShotKam off. Turn it on in WiFi Mode to view shots in the mobile app. Remember: you must turn the ShotKam off when switching between Normal Shooting Mode and WiFi Mode. No LED lights when ShotKam is off.

Steps to Resolve Missing Videos on Gen 4 and Gen 4 Mini
- Check that you are shooting in Normal Shooting Mode (one quick click and release of the control button, one green LED light), not WiFi Mode (hold the control button for 3-5 seconds). WiFi Mode will wear down the ShotKam's battery more quickly, which can cause missed recordings.
- Ensure your ShotKam is fully charged (at least 3 hours or overnight).
- Always bump the gun with your hand before taking your shot. This will wake the ShotKam out of Sleep Mode so it is ready to save your shot as video. See Hunting with Gen 4 and Gen 4 Mini.
- Check that you have selected the correct Shooting Device in the ShotKam app. See Customize your settings.
If you use an over-and-under or break action shotgun, your Recoil and Wake-Up Sensitivity settings should be set to Normal. You can increase this to Very Sensitive to resolve missed recordings.
For missed recordings with semi-auto or pump action shotguns, please email support@shotkam.com.

For long recordings on the Gen 3, please click here.
Fix Long Recording Issues and Ground Videos
If you are getting long recordings or video of the ground, this typically means that your ShotKam is falsely detecting the action of your gun closing as a recoil. You should not see a blue LED light after the action is closed. Try closing the gun action more gently, if possible.
If you're still seeing the blue LED come on when you close your action:
- Connect to your ShotKam app and select the Gear icon to enter your settings.
- Scroll down and select "Recoil Sensitivity."
- Change this setting to "Less Sensitive."
Press "Save" once you've made this change. This will cause the ShotKam to be less sensitive to any movements, and you should no longer see videos of the ground.
If you are still experiencing issues, please contact Support@ShotKam.com for assistance.
